BAHAMAS PASSAGE EARLY MORNING PEACE

This plein air painting was done early one spring morning in the Bahamas, it could have been painted on any of the islands. The morning's brief rain had just cooled off the air and one could still smell the rain.

Although a small painting 16 x 20 this will be used as a study for a larger painting.

One can only believe the clear light blues and greens of the water by being there to experience it. I hold painting workshops in the Bahamas twice a year. Presently I am taking request for inclusion in the November Artist Painting Workshop held in Nassau, Bahamas. The workshop will include pastels and oils painted en plein air over 5 days.

Evening approaching in the Everglades is one of the most peaceful times of the day. Birds rush about catching the last rays of sun or their last evening meal.

The Everglades sky changes colours constantly as the light filters through the last clouds left over for the day after the daily afternoon rain. Early morning or late afternoon are my favorite times to paint in the Everglades. This oil painting required many layers of glazes to achieve the glowing tones of colour present. I love painting the Everglades and all Marsh Eco Systems with wide open vistas, there is a feeling that you can see forever.
These fragile systems are critical to preserve in their natural state for all wildlife.

The history of Koi is as mysterious as they are beautiful. Popular conviction would have us believe that Koi are indigenous to Japan. In fact, they are even mistakenly called “Japanese Goldfish” They are actually from the Carp family.

Koi are believed to originate from eastern Asia, in the Black, Caspian, Aral Seas and China. Carp fossils have been discovered in South China dating as far back as 20 million years ago. Some varieties are known for their hardiness, which records claim can live for long periods of time if simply wrapped in wet moss continuously kept damp.

The earliest written records of Koi, or Nishikigoi, (Japanese for "brocaded" carp) were first described in writing from a Chinese book written during the Western Chin Dynasty, around 265-316 A.D. At that time they were described as white, red, black and blue.

Koi are believed to have been introduced to Japan with the invading Chinese and a first account of them being kept by an emperor in Japan, apparently dates Back to AD 200.

My Inspiration: Last of Summer Sunflowers on the back roads of Tuscany.

When visiting Tuscany each year I paint Sunflowers, Lavender and Olive Trees.
Each Tuscan Sunflower is different with it's own personality, thus I usually sketch en plein air

the one that jumps out at me.

There is nothing more beautiful than the Tuscan fields of golden sunflowers surrounding a golden rustic house with a terra cotta roof.
These are views that I use in large paintings, but for the sketching en plein air there is always one sunflower among the many that calls out to be drawn.
I will be posting over the next few weeks series of these plein air sketches.

I had the good fortune to live on 17 Mile Drive on the ocean and every day I painted the surrounding area without beginning to record all of the beauty there. Paintings in this Panama City, Florida Dunes Series are the first of three for larger paintings. You can see the sea oats, dunes fences and sugar white sand. The most beautiful white sugar sand is in this area of beaches.

These are common beach paths used for many years. Over the years the dunes in this particular area have become much smaller. I will be adding paintings of beach areas where the dunes are very large later. I was born and grew up in this area of beaches and have a love for the Gulf Coast area that still influences me today. I hold yearly workshops along this beach area and we have great fun painting en plein air.

Development along this coast has destroyed much of the beach so it is really important to capture in paint the beaches as they are today and yesterday. I spent most of my childhood here on this beach. My love for tropical settings and colours was initially inspired along this coast.

Our Focus is on protecting our fragile eco systems around the world .....

This month finds me focused on helping in any way I can to support volunteers working to save the ocenas, reefs and beaches.

This painting "Out Island Beach" that was done on location in a pristine Environment which we all appreciate so much. The emotion of incredible peacefulness with pastel cloud formations and the smell of fresh breezes was overwhelming I was scouting this location for an outdoor painting workshop at a later date. I paint many studies en plein air in areas such as this.

My journey as an artist as many of you know is to preserve these beautiful special places on the earth for future generations to enjoy. Mahalo for helping…..

I am a world traveler painting as I go, a visual journey depicting a changing way of life, as ocean front disappears from our landscape.

Blue Fish Studio is a part of our creative team/staff that works with the production of more informal art works such as series of sea shell prints used for signed limited editions, sold in Audubon Stores and Book Stores, hand painted furniture, hand painted wooden screens, hand painted tropical fruit wooden bowls, hand carved blocks used for original silk and rice paper prints. This continuation post continues exerts from my sketchbooks recording beautiful specimens from private homes gardens in the Caribbean and Hawaii.

This particular Iris was found in the home garden of Mr T. Tanaka living on the ocean in Kialua. Mr Tanaka was from Japan originally and had lived and brought up his family in Hawaii. He as since passed away but remembered by all of us with great affection and reverence. His Japanese garden lives on. I lived down the block from Mr Tanaka on the ocean in Kialua and enjoyed many special peaceful hours spent in his reflection garden.

As typical in all islands culture Mr Tanaka grew many of the flowers of his native homeland and kept his special memories alive that way.

One of the things I love to do while in Bermuda is to walk along streets of beautiful soft pink and pastel cottages. The flowers in these gardens are beyond compare. Every variety of flowering bulbs have been brought to Bermuda from the residents original country of origin. You can almost tell from the gardens where the residents originated from.
Many of the studies that I post over the next week will be a surprise to you that these bulbs are growing on
display in Bermuda.

These are quick studies some made on the spot, some I begin at the location and finish later
in the tea shop.

Bermuda of all areas that I have lived and spent extended time painting retains the most British of culture in plants, gardens, foods and all cutoms.

Of all flowering bulbs, amaryllis are the easiest to bring to bloom. This can be accomplished indoors or out, and over an extended period of time. The amaryllis originated in South America's tropical regions and has the botanical name Hippeastrum. The large flowers and ease with which they can be brought to bloom make amaryllis popular and in demand worldwide. The amaryllis comes in many beautiful varieties including various shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange. My Inspiration: Each year I spend a few weeks in St Georges, Bermuda in order to paint the local scenery and culture. Most of my original oil paintings of Bermuda are filled with the bright yet delicate tropical colors.

The pink sands in Bermuda turn salmon color in the setting sun. Bermuda’s pink sand beaches look as if they have been dyed with iridescent paints.
The colors in the sand are created by the force of the ocean’s powerful waves that crush sea invertebrates like coral, mollusks, clams, and other organisms.
The remains of the red-coloured creatures mix with the other sea animals. The pulverized shells mix with the sand giving it a pink tint.
This soft rose color of Bermuda’s beaches contrast perfectly with the aquamarine ocean waters. This color palette equals an artist’s paradise.

This oil painting of a private, secluded cove is one of the most perfect examples of the pink sand and aquamarine water. I return to this cove each year to paint, always undisturbed by visitors. This year I will be returning in the winter to this spot holding en plein air workshops...

This was originally one of many small en plein air paintings in oil later in my studio turned into a larger painting.

Bermuda is a self-governing British Colonial territory north of the Caribbean full of culture and a beautiful preserved way of life.

BAHAMAS PASSAGE EARLY MORNING PEACE
This plein air painting was done early one spring morning in the Bahamas, it could have been painted on any of the islands. The morning's brief rain had just cooled off the air and one could still smell the rain.

Although a small painting 16 x 20 this will be used as a study for a larger painting.
One can only believe the clear light blues and greens of the water by being there to experience it. I hold painting workshops in the Bahamas twice a year.

The pink sands in Bermuda turn salmon color in the setting sun. Bermuda’s pink sand beaches look as if they have been dyed with iridescent paints. The colors in the sand are created by the force of the ocean’s powerful waves that crush sea invertebrates like coral, mollusks, clams, and other organisms. The remains of the red-coloured creatures mix with the other sea animals. The pulverized shells mix with the sand giving it a pink tint. This soft rose color of Bermuda’s beaches contrast
perfectly with the aquamarine ocean waters. This color palette equals an artist’s paradise.
This oil painting of a private, secluded cove is one of the most perfect examples
of the pink sand and aquamarine water. I return to this cove each year to paint,
always undisturbed by visitors.
This was originally one of many small en plein air paintings in oil later in my studio
turned into a larger painting.

Bermuda is a self-governing British Colonial territory north of the Caribbean full of culture and a beautiful preserved way of life.

Honoring Toulouse-Lautrec Images International Artist Day by Phyllis O'Shields

MY INSPIRATION: The strong contour and gesture captured in the line work of Toulouse-Lautrec. Strong Japanese influence in line and colour which I love. Toulouse-Lautrec created and saved imagery of private and quiet moments, exalting the soft-spoken.

Later today I will post one of my pastel sketches re-visiting the work of Lautrec.

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa or simply Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ʁi də tuluz loˈtʁɛk]) (24 November 1864 – 9 September 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, and illustrator, whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of fin de siècle Paris yielded an œuvre of exciting, elegant and provocative images of the modern and sometimes decadent life of those times. Toulouse-Lautrec is known along with Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period. In a 2005 auction at Christie's auction house a new record was set when "La blanchisseuse", an early painting of a young laundress, sold for $22.4 million U.S.

GREAT ART IN SPITE OF HIS DISABILITIES:

Physically unable to participate in most of the activities typically enjoyed by men of his age, Toulouse-Lautrec immersed himself in his art. He became an important Post-Impressionistpainter, art nouveau illustrator, and lithographer; and recorded in his works many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris.

Toulouse-Lautrec was drawn to Montmartre, an area of Paris famous for its bohemian lifestyle and for being the haunt of artists, writers, and philosophers. Studying with Bonnat placed Henri in the heart of Montmartre, an area that he would rarely leave over the next 20 years.

Toulouse-Lautrec, a misshapened and ridiculed small man whose parents were aristocratic first cousins, used his artworks to promote empathy for non-idealized, ordinary people. Behind the bright lights, mirrors, and festivities of the Rue des Moulins, Toulouse-Lautrec emphasizes the realities of working women. He paints women who don’t have traditionally perceived “feminine” and young hourglass shapes. Some of the arms on these women are bigger than most men’s arms. He does several paintings where the women are clearly struggling to squeeze their bodies into undersized corsets.

He created some idealized renderings of idealized women – the headlining singers and showgirls of his era. And these paintings and posters are also beautiful. But they are not beautiful because of their symmetry, smoothness, and perfection. They are more beautiful because of their individualized characterizations, expressiveness, and striking graphic strength.

His lines are loose, his borders intentionally imperfected. The women rarely “pose.” Rather, Toulouse-Lautrec took great care to allow them to move freely while he captured their natural postures.

Unlike most paintings of ballerinas, where the women are striking extreme poses, toes pointed, backs stiff & arched, and arms extended, Toulouse-Lautrec instead shows ballerinas at rest with their energy spent from working long, hard hours.

My Inspiration: Koi are the image of Serenity and Peace.

Koi are believed to originate from eastern Asia, in the Black, Caspian, Aral Seas and China. Carp fossils have been discovered in South China dating as far back as 20 million years ago. Some varieties are known for their hardiness, which records claim can live for long periods of time if simply wrapped in wet moss continuously kept damp.

The earliest written records of Koi, or Nishikigoi, (Japanese for "brocaded" carp) were first described in writing from a Chinese book written during the Western Chin Dynasty, around 265-316 A.D. At that time they were described as white, red, black and blue.

Koi are believed to have been introduced to Japan with the invading Chinese and a first account of them being kept by an emperor in Japan, apparently dates Back to AD 200.

I hope you enjoy these images of Koi. I paint them en plein air from ponds in Hawaii. This should be framed using a mat covered in rice paper with Japanese scroll proportions, the frame should be black matte hand rubbed and narrow. I can give you references on a framer for this traditional method.

When visiting Tuscany each year I paint Sunflowers, Lavender and Olive Trees. Each Tuscan Sunflower is different with it's own personality, thus I usually sketch en plein air

There is nothing more beautiful than the Tuscan fields of golden sunflowers surrounding a golden rustic house with a terra cotta roof. These are views that I use in large paintings, but for the sketching en plein air there is always one sunflower among the many that calls out to be drawn. I will be posting over the next few weeks series of these plein air sketches.

My Inspiration: Sunflowers on the back roads of Tuscany. I came across a fields of Red and Mahogany Sunflowers and could not resist sketching one right on the spot. The petals are very velvety.

The best way to find sunflowers in Tuscany is drive on small roads in the countryside
in Val d’Orcia or Maremma -

My Inspiration: 17 Mile Drive, Monterey, California,
Point Lobos, Pacific Grove Californai, Big Sur Highway 1.

Big Sur and the entire Monterey Coastal area is one of Nature’s Magical Places. I lived on Seventeen Mile Drive for a couple of years and enjoyed painting the entire coastline in all kinds of weather and at all times of day. I will enjoy sharing these paintings with you as time goes by. Although not a tropical subject which I usually paint, this Monterey Coastal area holds an important place in my portfolio of works.

Highway 1 in Big Sur is a designated American National Scenic Byway. This highway is unique and has something distinct to offer- Big Sur has a long list of unique features to enhance your visit to Big Sur coast that make Big Sur's designation stand out. Artists and non artists alike will find the winding highway without compare.

Highway 1 in Big Sur is famous as one of the crown jewels of the America's Byways program. Along this beautiful coastal highway it is not unusual to see soaring California Condors, migrating Gray, Humpback and Blue whales. In the southern part of Big Sur you can drive right up to the beach and witness the annual mating rituals of the elephant seals. December through February is the peak of the season when the large males are competing for their mates. This can make for some very exciting viewing. Hope you can visit this area….
