Hawaii Seascape Beach Oil Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism

Hawaii Seascape Beach

A private Hawaiian Beach tucked away, everyone who lives in Hawaii has one special spot. This is mine.

Aloha and Hele Mai,

This is the place that I always go back to when I take time to relax and commune with nature, take part in a little introspection and revitalize my soul with the inspiration nature provides for future paintings. Living in Hawaii for a few years and now visiting there every year to paint renews my earliest memories that connect me to nature.

I always discover something beneath the surface In Hawaii , emotions tied to the subject matter are an elusive part of art. Every viewer will in their own personal context recreate this special emotion making the painting their own experience

My Third Audubon Seashell Collection
These card size paintings in pastel and watercolour are being used as another card series for Audubon Stores, this is the third series I have created for them. The backs of the cards have a complete description of the shell and its habitat.

My sea shell cards are sold in book stores, gift shops and stores through the South East, Caribbean and Hawaii.
Many people frame the cards as they are on a very heavy gloss paper stock, archival, suitable for framing.

Most of these shells in the collection are found in the Caribbean, Florida & East Coast, California and Hawaii.
A wonderful place to look up your favorite beautiful shell http://www.blogger.com/goog_1499547105

Everyone loves sea shells and has special memories of a vacation spent at the beach. I look forward to hearing from all seashell collectors. Please drop me an email and share with me your collection. I have been a devoted seashell collector for many years.

These are available in cards for sell and small glicee prints on my web store.

Tuscany Sunflower Studies Series Pastel Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism

Tuscany Sunflower Series VII
Pastel 12 x 16 without mat
Canson Mi-Teintes
Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism
copyright 2011 PO'Shields

My Inspiration: Last of Summer Sunflowers on the back roads of Tuscany.

When visiting Tuscany each year I paint Sunflowers, Lavender and Olive Trees.
Each Tuscan Sunflower is different with it's own personality, thus I usually sketch en plein air
the one that jumps out at me.

There is nothing more beautiful than the Tuscan fields of golden sunflowers surrounding a golden rustic house with a terra cotta roof.
These are views that I use in large paintings, but for the sketching en plein air there is always one sunflower among the many that calls out to be drawn.
I will be posting over the next few weeks series of these plein air sketches.

Bravissima!

Highway One is surely one of the most beautiful magical places on this earth.
Every turn is a painting waiting to be created. I had the good fortune to live on 17 Mile Drive on the ocean and every day I painted the surrounding area without beginning to record all of the beauty there. Changing landscape due to fog early morning and late afternoon was a constant challenge. I love the fog and the sun in this area.

Tahiti is a mystical place at all times of day. The colours change constantly, the intensity and brightness of the colour is very difficult to believe when translated to canvas. TROPICAL SEASCAPE SERIES
My Inspiration:  Each year I spend a few weeks in St Georges, Bermuda in order to paint the local scenery and culture. Most of my original oil paintings of Bermuda are filled with the
 bright yet delicate tropical colors.
The pink sands in Bermuda turn salmon color in the setting sun. Bermuda’s pink sand beaches look as if they have been dyed with iridescent paints. The colors in the sand are created by the force of the ocean’s powerful waves that crush sea invertebrates like coral, mollusks, clams, and other organisms. The remains of the red-coloured creatures mix with the other sea animals. The pulverized shells mix with the sand giving it a pink tint. This soft rose color of Bermuda’s beaches contrast
perfectly with the aquamarine ocean waters. This color palette equals an artist’s paradise.
This oil painting of a private, secluded  cove is one of the most perfect examples
of the pink sand and aquamarine water. I return to this cove each year to paint,
 always undisturbed by visitors.
This was originally one of many small en plein air paintings in oil later in my studio
 turned into a larger painting.
Bermuda is a self-governing  British Colonial territory north of the Caribbean full of culture and a beautiful preserved way of life.

Monterey Cypress Oil, by Phyllis O'Shields

Monterey Cypress
Original Oil 11 x 14 inches
 Museum Wrapped Canvas
By Phyllis O'Shields

My Inspiration: 17 Mile Drive, Monterey, California,
Point Lobos, Pacific Grove Californai, Big Sur Highway 1.
Big Sur and the entire Monterey Coastal area is one of Nature’s Magical Places.  I lived on Seventeen Mile Drive for a couple of years and enjoyed painting the entire coastline in all kinds of weather and at all times of day.   I will enjoy sharing these paintings with you as time goes by. Although not a tropical subject which I usually paint, this Monterey Coastal area holds an important place in  my portfolio of works.

Highway 1 in Big Sur is a designated
American National Scenic Byway.  This highway is unique and has something distinct to offer- Big Sur has a long list of unique features to enhance your visit to Big Sur coast that make Big Sur's designation stand out. Artists and non artists alike will find the winding highway without compare.

Highway 1 in Big Sur is famous as one of the crown jewels of the America's Byways program.  Along this beautiful coastal highway it is not unusual to see soaring California Condors, migrating Gray, Humpback and Blue whales.  In the southern part of Big Sur you can drive right up to the beach and witness the annual mating rituals of the elephant seals. December through February is the peak of the season when the large males are competing for their
mates. This can make for some very exciting viewing.  Hope you can visit this area….

Monet's Garden Giverny Oil Painting Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism Artist

Monet’s Garden at Giverny - Reflections

24 x 36  inches
Original Oil on Canvas
Click HERE for more information
EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE SERIES
My InspirationThere are two parts in Monet's garden: a flower garden called Clos Normand in front of the house and a Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road. The two parts of Monet's garden contrast and complement one another. One of my most inspired painting trips was to this garden and the town of Giverny. Painting in Monet’s beloved village of Giverny, France was beyond description.
My first impression to all of this was sensory overload. But after a while of just looking and soaking it in I was able to organize my feelings enough to begin painting. My first paintings en plein air were small oil paintings. Later in my studio this is one of the larger oil paintings that I completed.
The reflections in the water garden are more interesting than the subject viewed upright. Truly a time where negative and positive space are equal – creating true Notan, a Japanese Design concept creating the strongest painting. I believe that this is the reason artists are so drawn to paint this water garden over and over again.

Sanibel Island Shelling Beach by Phyllis OShields

"Sanibel Island Florida A Shelling Beach"

Original Oil  11 x 14 inches on Museum Wrapped Canvas

Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are wonderful shelling beaches.
This painting is one of those little jewels, painted en plein air, just because I was there and it was a perfect day. Many plein air paintings are born under those circumstances.

I have taught many workshops on these beaches and this was painted on a day that I was scouting a location for another winter workshop. This small study will become a larger canvas this year.
Sanibel Island and Captiva Island Florida are the perfect choice for a vacation whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family trip or a nature vacation. The perfect islands for artist and for shelling.
Enjoy 15 miles of unspoiled beaches, 22 miles of bike paths, 50 types of fish, 230 types of birds, 250 types of shells and 0 stop lights.
There are many attractions on these  islands including the nature preserve, Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and many outdoor activities including bikingshelling, fishing, bird watchingboatinggolfing, and snorkeling just to name a few.  Sanibel Island & Captiva Islands also feature many wonderful cultural offerings in the area of the Arts, Theater, and Music.  A perfect vacation or artist refuge.  I always spend part of the winter months here. My sea shell collections, paintings of shells for a book and editions of shell cards for Audubon were all conceived here in this environment.  The pastel colors of the sky, sand, shells and water are all surrounding.

Thus far, not any of the oil spill affecting area. It is inevitable that the spill will reach here drastically affecting the beaches and wildlife. I am returning next week to capture all the sketches, photos and painting that I can before the oil reaches the shore and wildlife.

Art to Help the Gulf Oil Spill - Great Results - Phyllis OShields

ART TO HELP THE GULF OIL SPILL CONTINUES - GREAT RESPONSE THUS FAR - WE HAVE DECIDED TO CONTINUE PROGRAM

Greetings Everyone,

The oil spill breaks my heart. I love nature and I love the gulf coast where I was born and have lived for many years.  The mangroves, the birds, the fish, the crabs and hundreds of other living things in our eco-system are being harmed.     Nature is my life. I want to help......

Most of you know of my mission in painting and preserving all coastal areas around the world.

I can help with your help. 25% of all purchases of paintings or prints from me will go to the Audubon Society’s fund to help rescue birds.
Have you been thinking of freshening your art collection or just want new prints for your walls NOW is a great time to go for it!

Go to my website http://www.oshieldsfineart.com and enjoy looking at the beauty of the gulf and all Florida coastal areas and the Keys.

All of it is now in danger of being damaged by the spill but I know we will be doing all that we can to save our fabulous coasts and wildlife.

Thank you for helping!
