View to Lanai Hawaii Oil Seascape by Phyllis O'Shields

View to Lanai Hawaii  TROPICAL DREAMSCAPES

Just Another Day in Paradise Series

©PhyllisO’Shields 2010
My InspirationLiving in Hawaii I found some of my happiest times were painting trips to Lanai. Lanai is the most secluded island in Hawaii and also called the Pineapple Island because of the past island wide active plantations.  The only town is Lānaʻi City, a small settlement.
The peaceful atmosphere there is created because there are no traffic lights, no shopping malls, and no public transportation. Special places and beautiful views can be visited only via dirt roads
that require a four wheel vehicle.
Painting on the island involves my hiking into secluded areas carrying a back pack with all painting supplies and an easel.  This is very much like hiking in Bermuda to get up close and personal with the area you wish to paint, but well worth the effort in both places.
I usually go over via a short trip across the Auau Channel on the Maui-Lanai Ferry,
beautiful views all the way, return on the last Ferry of the evening.

Sanibel Island Lighthouse was painted in the early morning. The sun was very bright and the clouds a delicate pink as early morning sunrises usually are on the island.
An ideal day bright, sunny without even a breeze.
I have painted this lighthouse many times as the setting is ideal with beach and sand. This painting is a little different in that I painted it with very thin water
colour type glazes and washes in oil.
The day was so delicate in colour that it gave a very ethereal  quality to the scene. This is an excellent shelling beach, world known. I hope you enjoy this painting.

TROPICAL SEASCAPE SERIES

On July 11th I attended the Jimmy Buffett live Gulf Concert for the BP Gulf Oil spill victims.
Along with 10’s of thousands of other Parrotheads we had a wonderful time.

This was painted en plein air while at Gulf Shores.  It was painted as a small study in preparation for a larger painting.  This painting was sold with entire proceeds for the benefit of the Gulf Oil Spill victims.

I will be adding it to a selection of archival prints and greeting cards today.
All proceeds will go to Gulf Oil Spill Victims.
The most beautiful white sand beaches are along this strip of land.
The National Guard was present to make sure none of us Parrotheads wandered into the tarry surf.

Sanibel Island Shelling Beach by Phyllis OShields

"Sanibel Island Florida A Shelling Beach"

Original Oil  11 x 14 inches on Museum Wrapped Canvas

Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are wonderful shelling beaches.
This painting is one of those little jewels, painted en plein air, just because I was there and it was a perfect day. Many plein air paintings are born under those circumstances.

I have taught many workshops on these beaches and this was painted on a day that I was scouting a location for another winter workshop. This small study will become a larger canvas this year.
Sanibel Island and Captiva Island Florida are the perfect choice for a vacation whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family trip or a nature vacation. The perfect islands for artist and for shelling.
Enjoy 15 miles of unspoiled beaches, 22 miles of bike paths, 50 types of fish, 230 types of birds, 250 types of shells and 0 stop lights.
There are many attractions on these  islands including the nature preserve, Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and many outdoor activities including bikingshelling, fishing, bird watchingboatinggolfing, and snorkeling just to name a few.  Sanibel Island & Captiva Islands also feature many wonderful cultural offerings in the area of the Arts, Theater, and Music.  A perfect vacation or artist refuge.  I always spend part of the winter months here. My sea shell collections, paintings of shells for a book and editions of shell cards for Audubon were all conceived here in this environment.  The pastel colors of the sky, sand, shells and water are all surrounding.

Thus far, not any of the oil spill affecting area. It is inevitable that the spill will reach here drastically affecting the beaches and wildlife. I am returning next week to capture all the sketches, photos and painting that I can before the oil reaches the shore and wildlife.

Art to Help the Gulf Oil Spill - Great Results - Phyllis OShields

ART TO HELP THE GULF OIL SPILL CONTINUES - GREAT RESPONSE THUS FAR - WE HAVE DECIDED TO CONTINUE PROGRAM

Greetings Everyone,

The oil spill breaks my heart. I love nature and I love the gulf coast where I was born and have lived for many years.  The mangroves, the birds, the fish, the crabs and hundreds of other living things in our eco-system are being harmed.     Nature is my life. I want to help......

Most of you know of my mission in painting and preserving all coastal areas around the world.

I can help with your help. 25% of all purchases of paintings or prints from me will go to the Audubon Society’s fund to help rescue birds.
Have you been thinking of freshening your art collection or just want new prints for your walls NOW is a great time to go for it!

Go to my website http://www.oshieldsfineart.com and enjoy looking at the beauty of the gulf and all Florida coastal areas and the Keys.

All of it is now in danger of being damaged by the spill but I know we will be doing all that we can to save our fabulous coasts and wildlife.

Thank you for helping!

Phyllis
