Bahamas Out Island Beach Day Oil Phyllis OShields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

"Bahamas Out Island Beach Day"
Original Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas (1.5") painted around edges  18 x 24"

The Bahamas Out Islands provide many places for your own private beach to spend the day. This is one of my favorites.  The morning clouds usually have a delicate pink in them which is perfect to paint from.  I have spent many days on this beach painting in perfect peace.  I hope this painting transports you into a  peaceful place.

Hawaiian Dreams Seascape Oil Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

Hawaiian Dreams Oil Seascape Phyllis O'Shields
Original Oil Painting on linen canvas 24 x 36

A private Hawaiian Beach tucked away, everyone who lives in Hawaii has one special spot. This is mine.

Aloha and Hele Mai,
This is the place that I always go back to when I take time to relax and commune with nature, take part in a little introspection and revitalize my soul with the inspiration nature provides for future paintings. Living in Hawaii for a few years and now visiting there every year to paint renews my earliest memories that connect me to nature.

I always discover something beneath the surface In Hawaii , emotions tied to the subject matter are an elusive part of art. Every viewer will in their own personal context recreate this special emotion making the painting their own experience.

Hawaii is truly a paradise. Every island in the chain and every view transports you into another world of beauty. I lived in Kailua, Oahu for  many years and traveled to each of the islands on painting journeys.

The Aloha spirit serves to make the views even more beautiful.  I hope all of my paintings of Hawaii remind you of that special beach that takes you away into a very peaceful place.

Tahiti, French Polynesia Paul Gauguin Pastel Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

Exploring Tahiti, French Polynesia
Plein air pochade - Pastel on Japanese Kasuiri Kozo Bark Hand Laid Paper©copyright Phyllis O'Shields 2010

This pochade was done on a beach in Tahiti, French Polynesia.  The same land that Paul Gauguin painted on.
These first studies are quickly done to become familiar with my surroundings. Later days produced plein air seascapes, figurative studies
 and landscapes.
Later this week I will begin posting my series of Figurative French Polynesian Goddesses.  You can see today the same things that Gauguin saw in his paintings, a land very much unchanged.
Tahiti  offers a true Paradise today just as in Gauguin’s time, making it perfect for the artist to backpack into the wild mountains or paint along the lagoons and beaches. The colours are unlike  any other group of islands.  .
When working  en plein air in the islands  I like to use rough Kasuiri, Kozo Bark hand laid paper from Japan which has texture that adds to the environment on the beach. Often I finish with a mixture of sand and bugs on the paper. It is very forgiving when using en plein air.

These sketches will be used in a series of my plein air explorations of islands recorded in journals.   They are going into a current book under construction now.

EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE SERIES
My InspirationThere are two parts in Monet's garden: a flower garden called Clos Normand in front of the house and a Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road. The two parts of Monet's garden contrast and complement one another. One of my most inspired painting trips was to this garden and the town of Giverny. Painting in Monet’s beloved village of Giverny, France was beyond description.
My first impression to all of this was sensory overload. But after a while of just looking and soaking it in I was able to organize my feelings enough to begin painting. My first paintings en plein air were small oil paintings. Later in my studio this is one of the larger oil paintings that I completed.
The reflections in the water garden are more interesting than the subject viewed upright. Truly a time where negative and positive space are equal – creating true Notan, a Japanese Design concept creating the strongest painting. I believe that this is the reason artists are so drawn to paint this water garden over and over again.

Jamaica Greater Antilles Pastel Seascape Painting Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism

Jamaica Greater Antilles Seascape
Pastel on Paper unmated 19 x 24 inches
  ©PhyllisO’Shields 2010
Jamaica's beaches are beautiful and private.  I visit Ocho Rios for at least  two weeks each year for plein air painting, usually in pastel. Ah, the joys of painting plein air... This was a challenge - I started early in the morning but as the morning progressed I was attacked by sand fleas... really a labor of love, but worth the effort. The next morning I went out equipped with bug spray.

This pastel was painted at one of my favorite desolate beaches. Jamaica is beautiful in its combination of beaches with aqua water and the heavy  foliage in the Blue Mountains.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed creating the painting.
