Seascape Bahamas Passage Early Morning Peace by Phyllis O'Shields

This plein air painting was done early one spring morning in the Bahamas, it could have been painted  on any of the islands.  The morning's brief rain had just cooled off the air and one could still smell the rain.

Although a small painting 16 x 20 this will be used as a study for a larger painting.
One can only believe the clear light blues and greens of the water by being there to experience it. I hold painting workshops in the Bahamas twice a year.

Gentle breezes, gentle colours, everything here was very gentle in feeling.  One did not want to disturb the idealic setting. Very transparent, luminescent  shades of colour were the challenge to recreate in this setting. The sky and the water seemed to blend together. The painting was basically created in the plein air tradition, but finished in the studio due to glazes applied.

Seascape Mangroves Late Afternoon Key Largo by Phyllis O'Shields

Late afternoon in the Key Largo mangroves is truly a magical time. Beautiful colours from the sun setting cast a glow over the entire area lighting up the sky and water with the reflections. This was truly an enjoyable time painting en plein air.  This is a small study 11 x 14 inches used for a larger painting.

Seascape Jamaica Out to Sea - Meditation Wooden Screen by Phyllis O'Shields

This Jamacian Sea Scape is painted on a solid wooden hand made screen with 4 adjustable panels. All hinges are solid brass. These are made to size specification by the patron.  Most usual positioning is at the fireplace or on top of tables. 19.5 x 36 inches.  This screen was also a study for a large painting and a mural.

These Hibiscus were sketched in watercolour early one moring while exploring the beautiful cottages that are located in St George, Bermuda.  Early morning is the time for all of the tropical flowers to bloom fresh for the day. Their colours match perfectly the brightly painted cottages.
These quick sketches are the reference for larger paintings at a later date.

Everywhere you walk you will see these papaya trees along the way. Papayas and Mangos are a staple of our daily diets there. It's all about the colour and the taste !

This was painted on Sanibel Island, Florida.  I have painted the Sanibel Light House many times with changing weather conditions and each time new things are discovered there. This painting is being created from very early morning light. The atmosphere is very light in pastel shades reflecting the early clear morning light there. The sand is very white and the water crystal clear. A very tranquil place to relax. One of my favorite place to collect shells.  The  fragile environment on Sanibel and Captiva Islands are of continuing concern.

Evening approaching in the Everglades is one of the most peaceful times of the day. Birds rush about catching the last rays of sun or their last evening meal.

The Everglades sky changes colours constantly as the light filters through the last clouds left over for the day after the daily afternoon rain. Early morning or late afternoon are my favorite times to paint in the Everglades. This oil painting required many layers of glazes to achieve the glowing tones of colour present. I love painting the Everglades and all Marsh Eco Systems with wide open vistas, there is a feeling that you can see forever.
These fragile systems are critical to preserve in their natural state for all wildlife.

Painting inspired by to long a night at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville in Key West.  "Parrothead" is a nickname for myself and all the other  fans of Jimmy Buffet. The Jimmy Buffet music has touched the lives of millions around the world, spanning generations and genres.

Our general theme is relaxation even while working... In 2009 there were 273 chapters of Parrothead Clubs in the United States. (with $19 Million raised to support charitable organizations)
Parrotheads in Paradise, Inc (not for profit corporation)  is a network of Parrothead International Clubs working as a humanitarian network sharing information for mutual benefit.  Activities carried out are  charitable, educational, and promote the general welfare of the community. (while providing a variety of social activities for people who are interested in Jimmy Buffet and the tropical lifestyle he personifies.
 

Margaritaville represents true escapism - a state of mind.  Life is never a well conceived voyage but rather a wonderful voyage that we make up as we go along. Spending large amounts of time in Key West helps me to keep the  Margaritaville spirit  alive in my heart no matter where I  happen to be painting.   Beach music is a wonderful way of maintaining a Margaritaville state of mind.
